The Winburnian reports:

After leaving school, Gerald commenced his career  with H.M. Office of Works. He enlisted in June 1940, gained his commission in the following year and was promoted to Captain in September 1942.
He proceeded to North Africa in November 1942, and it was on this front that he met his death in action.
A fine, upstanding, manly type of boy, quiet but Lynham was efficient and thorough in all that he undertook; and these qualities persisted to the end.
